Job Purpose
The Apprentice CNC Machinist will develop the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to operate CNC machining equipment safely and effectively within a UK manufacturing environment. The role combines on-the-job learning (minimum 80%) with off-the-job training (minimum 20%), leading to a nationally recognised apprenticeship qualification and successful completion of the End-Point Assessment (EPA).
Key Responsibilities – CNC Machining & Production
– Assist with setting, operating, and basic programming of CNC machines
– Load materials, tooling, and CNC programs in accordance with procedures
– Monitor machine performance and report issues
– Carry out secondary operations such as deburring and cleaning
– Progress towards independent machine operation as competence increases
Engineering Drawings & Specifications
– Learn to read and interpret engineering drawings and tolerances
– Follow work instructions and quality standards
– Understand basic tooling, materials, and cutting data
Quality Control & Inspection
– Perform dimensional inspections using measuring equipment
– Accurately record inspection and production data
– Report any non-conforming parts in line with quality procedures
Health, Safety & Compliance
– Work in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
– Follow risk assessments, COSHH, and safe systems of work
– Use PPE correctly and maintain a safe working environment
Maintenance & Housekeeping
– Assist with routine machine checks and basic maintenance
– Carry out tool changes under supervision
– Maintain 5S and workplace cleanliness standards
Apprenticeship Training & Development
– Attend college or training provider sessions as required
– Complete a minimum of 20% off-the-job training
– Maintain an apprenticeship portfolio and training evidence
– Prepare for Functional Skills (if required) and End-Point Assessment
Requirements
– Interest in engineering and manufacturing
– Willingness to learn and follow instructions
– Good attention to detail
– Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious
– GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English
– Engineering or Design Technology qualification
– Previous workshop or manufacturing exposure
